Three Kings Day on Tech-Free Thursdays

Epiphany - Three Kings Day January 7th 2011
The Epiphany just happened to fall on a Thursday this year, so that was the theme of our Tech Free Thursday this week. I did some research to find some good ideas, as I didn't have any gold, frankincense or myrrh laying around to show the kids. I found a great blog Motherly Loving that had some great ideas that we used. She included blessing for your house and the blessing for the piece of chalk that you use in the blessing. I remember back in Grade School doing this blessing throughout the school classroom doors. I had forgot about it. I remember dressing up as "kings" with two of my friends Kit and Jean and going around to all the classrooms with the chalk and blessing the doors. I know I have a picture of us three dressed up somewhere in my house, and searched for it, but was unable to find it. When I do, I will scan and post it. I think it would have been fun to show my children too.

Here is Ali doing the blessing over the front door of our house. I went onto Nick.com and found more Epiphany ideas including making your own crowns. I printed the ones that you can download from their site, but was not the happiest with it. So we cut them out and covered them with tinfoil and added our own decorations to them.

Matt did the blessing over our mudroom door, which lets face it, is the most used door in our house. We tried the Lamb's Wool recipe on the Motherly Loving blog, but I have to admit, we didn't care for it very much. But it made the house smell real good with the baked apples.

Timmy, being a little shorter than his brother and sister, got to bless our patio door to the deck. He was not tall enough to write above the door, so he stood on the chair and blessed the side of the door. We kept telling him that this is the only time he will be able to write on the walls. Other Epiphany ideas I read about were spice cakes. I just happened to have a box of spice cake in the house, so we made that up also. We hid a Hershey Kiss in the cake for the prize. When cutting it up the boys were so excited to see who was going to get the chocolate, because that person is blessed with good luck throughout the following year. Jeff ended up getting the chocolate, and was hoping that the good luck would start right away.
This was a wonderful night filled with many different activities all centered around the three kings finding the baby Jesus. This is a tradition that we will be doing every year from now on.

Electronic Free Thursdays - Sledding

What do you do after over 16" of snow falls the weekend before? Why you go sledding on your Electronic Free Thursday!

We were lucky enough to finally get a good snow fall in the Twin Cities over the past weekend. Sure everything came to a stop for awhile, but it made for great sledding conditions. My daughters Girl Scout troop was planning a family sledding adventure, and we went to enjoy the crisp 12 degree night.

All the kids had a great time on the lit sledding hill in the neighboring town. We even ended up the evening with a bon fire, smores and hot cocoa. Little chilly at the end, but my kids said that they had a blast. It was nice to do a physical activity rather than a Christmas craft during the month.

I have attached a video for you to see just how crazy some of the kids are. What a great time, but the snow won't stay around too long. After a good snow fall everybody heads out to the hills, and it gets warn back down to the grass pretty quickly. Glad we had the opportunity to get our sledding in.

Electronic Free Thursdays

We finally got into a groove of doing our Electronic Free Thursdays!

We planned to start at back to school time, but with two boys in football and my daughter in tennis, there wasn't a free evening that we were all home at the same time. So in comes December. What a perfect time to get Christmas crafts and projects done around the house!

This past Thursday we did paper ornament crafts:

These are the finished projects, Origami Paper Wreaths and Paint Sample Balls.

Paint Sample Balls what you need:

8 Paint Samples (large & solid colors)

Large circle punch, or a circle cutter

Tacky Glue

Clothes Pins

Start by cutting all eight paint samples into the largest circle you can by either using a punch or circle cutter. Then on the back sides take a dull exacto knife and score a triangle into the back of them. I did not measure, which is why ours didn't match up perfectly, but I didn't mind. Fold the triangle parts up to make flat areas for gluing. Start gluing one flat section to the next clothes pinning along the way. We found that two clothes pins per side worked the best. Glue four sections together to form a bowl, then do the other four sections together. It is then easier to just combine the two bowl shaped pieces. Let them thoroughly dry and glue in a ribbon for hanging, or just place them on the branch. Each one will be unique depending on the paint colors that the kids pick out.
Origami Paper Wreaths what you need:

2 sheets of 12X12 scrap booking paper

Glue

Paper cutter

I didn't take individual pictures of how to make these, but they are basic origami triangles. I learned how to make these from Martha Stewart with On Demand Programming. You can also see how to make them from this You Tube video. She very nicely shows you the same fold that I taught my kids. I was unable to find the directions on Martha's webiste, but be sure to check OnDemand if you have that service.

These were the favorites of myself and the older kids. My youngest found it to frustrating and ended up just cutting our leftovers into smaller pieces, keeping him busy.

Spring Cleaning again

I have been very busy that past couple of weekends, so a major spring cleaning has not happened yet. But I can do small manageable tasks along the way to make it feel more organized and fresher. Now if we could just get some spring weather, I would be happy.

My daughter & I tackled my main drawer in the bathroom. She knew she would be getting some things that I never use, so she willingly helped me. We started by washing all the hair and make-up brushes that we both had. You know all those trial sized bottles of Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo that we all got for free with the $1.00 coupons, well that is perfect for washing brushes. We washed two hair brushes and about eleven make-up brushes with half a bottle of shampoo. Make sure to rinse the brushes VERY well to get all the shampoo out of them. There is nothing better than a squeaky clean hair brush.

This is a picture of my drawer before we started cleaning it. I am a little embarrassed at how cluttered and dirty it is. But I wanted to show a true before and after. I had little metal holders, but the eye liners and brushes kept sliding through the holes in the sides of them. So Ali gained two metal containers for her make-up, and I threw out sooooo much stuff. I only kept things that I either used every day, or on special occasions. My eyes have a reaction to mascara, and I don't wear lipstick very much, so those are my special occasion items.

Here is what I ended up with. I bought a cheap ($4.49) silverware storage system at Target, and sorted item by which part of the face they are for. Eye liners, lipsticks, foundations, eye shadows etc... I really like how it turned out. If you are thinking about using a silverware container for storage, be sure to measure the inside of the drawer, and bring the tape measure to the store with you. That way you will get the correct size the first time. I am sure dollar stores and thrift stores probably have these too, so be on the lookout.
What did you spring clean this past weekend?

Give me back that Filet-o-Fish

The following is a post from CheesyMeat.com. Had to pass this along if you can't get this stupid commercial out of your head either.

We have all tried the tartar sauce sandwich that has a hint of something that may have been fish in it, and a piece of orange plastic cheese hiding underneath it all. Ok, I am guilty of occasionally enjoying a Filet-O-Fish from McDonalds. After seeing this new commercial, I am making it a point to go buy a few. This commercial cracks me up. Who hasn’t been annoyed by the singing Billy Bass in the past? Add in an annoying song about the Filet-O-Fish sandwich and whammo. You have an annoying and hilarious commercial. This should have been a Superbowl commercial.

2 ringtones. The short is just the first 2 lines of the song, and the long is the entire song. Both are below in .wma and .mp3 formats Enjoy!Right click save as to download, or click arrow next to file to play.

Spring Cleaning - Master Closet

OK, here goes with my newest projects for the next few months...
SPRING CLEANING!
I wanted to share with you some of the worst rooms or areas in my house that need some major TLC.
So this weekend I tackled the master closet. We have a pretty good sized master closet, but we have also accumulated a pretty good amount of junk inside that master closet. I have our stash of Health and Beauty supplies in there, but never really had a good storage solution for them. While sitting and looking at the closet, I figured out that I never wear the long dresses that are in there, and they are taking up valuable space for the length of them. So after church yesterday, we made a trip to Menards (and got our free after rebate stuff) to get shelving. One of the things that my husband is pretty darn good at is building shelves. He takes real pride in his shelves.

So this above is the before and after of the shelves that he built. I still have room for our dirty clothes underneath, but now I have my own little store to shop from when looking for products. Everything is sorted and labeled, so even the kids can easily find a new shampoo for their bathroom. I totally love the look of it, and it actually makes the closet look alot brighter too.
I got rid of alot of clothes that Jeff and I no longer wear, and will be donating them sometime this week. I threw out alot of junk that I don't need or want anymore. And cleaned up the kids yearly boxes that stores their art work and papers from each school year. I also have their baby boxes in my closet, so nothing happens to them. After getting rid of my clothes, I realize that I now need to go hit the thrift store to get some summer clothes. You know how it is said that you wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time. Well, that is not true for me anymore. I got rid of everything that I haven't wore in the past year, and it feels great.

Follow along with my spring cleaning, it might be pretty scary, as I am trying to take before picture without tiding up first.
Next up...the linen closet in the master bathroom. Needs some major organization and getting rid of old products.
What spring cleaning projects do you have planned?

Happy One Year Anniversary

I can't believe that it has already been a full year of blogging today. It has gone by so quickly. I wish I could tell you how much money I have saved using this blog the past year. But I didn't keep that good of notes as to my savings. I do know alot has changed in my life since this blog has started.

  • I have a new job within this year,
  • I have a new dog, and have said good-bye to an old dog,
  • We stopped eating fast food,
  • We started using coupons for everything,
  • We learned to never pay full price for anything again,
  • We learned how to get free movie rentals,
  • We learned how to get free stuff in the mail,
  • We learned to never pay for a magazine subscription again,
  • We learned how to make our own cleaning supplies,
  • We learned to make homemade bread...well,
  • I have made new friends around the country through this site.

All in all it has been a busy and fun year. Learning new things, and sharing what I have learned along the way.

Where is this blog going in the next year? Well I just opened a group on Facebook. So if you are on Facebook, be sure to look up and join Mom is Broke. There you can easily share your good finds and great deals.

I hope to get more coupons and contests flowing every week. And will be keeping up with Freebie Fridays and once a week Living within your Means. Thank you for your support, and please let me know if there is something that you would like to see posted here in the future.

Here's to many more years of Mom is Broke.
Thanks,

Making More Money - Cash Crate

I have mentioned Cash Crate before, and it is a slow but stead form of income for myself. At this point it is covering a tank of gas every month. It's not a ton of money, but I am not going to turn down money of any kind. Here is how Cash Crate works:

First of all sign up. Be sure to have a spam e-mail account that you are using. Otherwise your e-mail account will be flooded with hundreds of unwanted e-mails a day.

Go into Members area (under your name) to see what offers are available.

There is a Cash Offers page. Those are the offers that you can do to earn the dollar amount that is displayed next to it. There is a daily survey link to do up to two daily surveys for money also.

How many offers you do is entirely up to you. You can do one hundred a day, or do just the daily surveys every day. The more you do, the more you make.

Once every month on the 15th, they send you a check out if you have cleared more than $20.00. It is really that easy! This past month I made $25.28. I have kept a running total on the side bar as to how much money I have made with Cash Crate. I am not breaking the bank, but it is great extra spending money.

If you have any questions about Cash Crate, please e-mail me and I will answer your questions.

Easter Basket Challenge

I know that Easter isn't just about eggs and tons of candy, but my kids would be shattered if they did not get a visit from the bunny. Every year I make their Easter baskets up from different thing I have collected throughout the year. Each child has a basket that is filled with unique things just for them. Only one year when we were getting back from a family vacation the day before Easter, have I ever bought one of those huge pre-made baskets. I enjoy the ones made with love in mind.

So this year I am posing a challenge to all my readers....an Easter Basket Challenge. Keep track of how much you are spending on one of your children's baskets. Try to keep it as low as possible. When the baskets are complete, take a picture of it and compose a list with costs of the contents. E-mail it to me & I will post them to share with everybody. I think it will be fun to see how everybody else does there baskets.

I already have the baskets (bought last year at 75% off) and a few stuffers. But Easter is only 50 days away, you better start thinking! You can leave comments as you go to keep everybody informed on how you are doing. Or post pictures on your blog and let us know they are there.

Happy Easter!

Moment of Clarity

This past Sunday night I had a clear moment of clarity in my life. Oprah would probably call it an "A-ha" moment.

You see last night, Sunday, was my oldest son's 10th birthday. Being my only child to have a winter birthday, we normally go somewhere for his parties. There is nothing worse than a houseful of young boys, and it being to cold outside to tell them to go outside and play.

So this year we took four of his closest friend to a local hotel that has a big water park inside of it. All the boys behaved, and had a great time burning off their winter energy. I, on the other hand was dreading squeezing into my five year old bathing suit, in my overweight body and winter pasty white skin. Lets face it, I am always pasty white, but it tends to look worse in the winter, under florescent lights.

When I was a child growing up, my family always went camping for a full week in the summer at Jellystone Park in Warrens Wisconsin. It was always the highlight of the summer. We went with my cousins and friends of the family. We normally totaled about five families. Back in the day, when the campground was MUCH smaller than it is now, the big attraction was the water slide. It only opened a few time during the day. And for something like $5.00 you could go down the water slide as many times as you could in half an hour. Trust me, when you are 10 years old, you can run up the stairs alot faster so you can go down the slide at least 20 times. The picture above is the actual water slide at the campground.

So having Matt's party at a water park, I was excited to go down a few water slides. I hadn't been to a water park for about 5 years, the last trip being Hurricane Harbor in Dallas. Well finding a tube was next to impossible at this park, so I decided to go down the one slide that you don't need a tube to go down. I calmly walked to the top of all the stairs with the other little kids running past me as fast as they could. Waited in line for my turn, asking the kids if this was a fun slide or not. They all told me it sped up about half way through the ride. I told them that if they hear screaming through the top of the tube, not to laugh at me. When it was my turn, I took a deep breath and shot my self down the tube as fast as I could.

Throughout this 20 second ride I came to four different conclusions.

#1 I am way to claustrophobic to do small tube rides.
#2 They are making water slides much faster nowadays.
#3 I feel the fatter you are, the faster you must go.
#4 I am way to old to do water slides any more.

When I got to the bottom of the ride, Jeff and Timmy were waiting for me to see how it went. I actually made Jeff put his hand on my chest to feel how fast my heart was racing. My hands didn't stop shaking for at least half an hour. It was a real adrenalin rush, but it was also the only water slide I did the entire time I was there. I figure I did one to prove that I can still have fun, but once was enough.
Today I am headed off to a snow tubing place to join up with my daughter and her friends. Hopefully I will fair better in a snow tube than I did with a water tube. Only in Minnesota can you do two different tubings in two days. I'll let you guys know how it goes, wish me luck.

Homemade Cleaners - All Purpose Cleaner

This is one of my newest and favorite cleaners. I use it to clean off the kitchen table, counter tops and even spot cleaning the floor. I am sure it can be used in tons of more places, but I have just started using it.

All Purpose Cleaner

1 spray bottle
3 cups hot water
1/4 cup white vinegar
2 teaspoons Borax
1/4 teaspoon liquid dish soap

I just dumped everything into the spray bottle & mixed. I would recommend that you mix it before you add the dish soap. If you add the soap with the other ingredients it makes it really bubbly. Next time I am going to mix the water, borax & vinegar first until the borax dissolves, then add the soap and mix gently again.

Update: I did use the 1:1 olive oil & vinegar as a wood polish. I used 2 teaspoons of each and it was just enough for my kitchen table. It did take quite a bit of elbow grease to polish it in, but it looks great. I will definitely use this recipe again!

Make it Yourself - Laundry Soap

Recipe #2
Laundry Soap

I have been using this laundry soap recipe for a few months now, and it works great too. Again, I have well and septic and it is safe for septic systems, and good with well water too.

What you need:

5 Gallon bucket
long spoon (wood or plastic)
spaghetti pot
measuring cups
empty gallon milk jug
empty laundry soap containers (optional)
1/3 bar Fels Naphtha soap
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup borax
lots of water

How to make it:

I could never find a bar of Fels Naphtha soap, so I used 1 full bar of regular soap. Try to use soap without any lotions, scents and as little color as possible. Grate the bar of soap. I used my stand mixer with the grated cheese attachment (real fun!). In the spaghetti pot add 6 cups of water and the grated soap. Cook, stirring constantly, until is melts. Add the washing soda and the borax, and stir again until they are dissolved. Turn your sink onto hot water and let run until it gets real hot. At this point remove from the heat and pour the whole pot into the 5 gallon bucket. On top of the soap mixture add 4 cups of HOT water, stir. Add one full gallon of water (milk jug full), plus another 6 cups of water. Stir, stir, stir.

Let the soap sit over night, cover to keep animals & little ones out of it! It will turn into a gelly gloppy mess. Stir one more time. I then use a large funnel and a measuring cup to pour it into my old laundry soap containers. Be careful not to fill it to the top.

When you go to use the soap, I just give it a good shake to loosen up the gel again, and fill the top cap. Just like regular store bought laundry soap. If you have room, you could also just have the 5 gallon bucket in your laundry room, and use a half cup measuring cup for each load.

I do not have a powdered laundry soap recipes, due to having a front loading machine. But I can check into them, and have one of my neighbors do the testing of it. I will let you know at a later date about it. If anybody has a fabric softener recipe, that is what I really need next.

Next week: basic cleaning solutions.

Thrift Store Challange

I love a good attainable challenge. Just ask my manager Melissa, she seems to find humor in challenging me lately :)

Every year my neighbors get together for a Christmas Progressive Dinner. We have done it for 5 years now, and we all only moved in 5 years ago. I am fortunate to have wonderful neighbors who I consider my closest of friends.

This years theme for the dinner was "The Ugliest Christmas Sweater Contest". As you can see above we all did a pretty good job. The camera didn't do justice to the sequins and sparkly beads of a few of the 80's style sweaters. But it was a blast.

We all set out to our different thrift stores to find our masterpieces. You all know that I regularly shop in thrift stores, but I don't believe that my neighbors do. I enjoyed listening to their stories about their shopping in thrift stores. A few of the husbands even chimed in about the great deals they were seeing in the store. Maybe I converted a few of them? To each their own, but at least with this theme, they all know where the thrift stores are now.

By they way, Lisa (far left) won the contest, and I (far right) took second place. But I think we were all winners for having the guts to actually go through with wearing these all night long!

I Have Changed My Site a Bit

If you have been reading here for awhile (first of all, Thank You), you may have noticed I changed up the site a little bit.

Here are my reasoning's:

#1 I took out most of the ads. Times are hard, and me advertising for other stores isn't going to make you want to buy stuff. If you want to buy stuff, you are on your computer right now, you can do it yourself. So I removed the ads, but kept the coupons!

#2 I added followers to my blog. I just learned how to do this! Please join if you can. You will not receive any e-mails or any spam. It is just fun to see the support for me, and makes this whole blogging experience a little more satisfying for myself.

#3 I added a great blog roll. These are the blogs that I personally read everyday. It is updated every time one of my fellow bloggers update their site. So if you would like to see where I get some of my great posts, or ideas, follow along with who I read too.

These changes seem to make the site load much quicker, which is nice for everybody. I hope you have enjoyed following along with my life here, and hope you have been saving money. We are tightening our belt even tighter at my house, so hopefully if you find some great deals, you can pass them along so I can post about them for all to read.

Hope you had a great weekend.

Show off on Saturdays

Not to many groceries to brag about this week.

Trip to Walgreens turned up 3 bags of Twizzlers for $.99 each. And 16 Halloween pencils, to give out at pre-school for $2.00.

Great trip to Aeropostale. Zip up sweatshirt for me, $25.00, undies for Ali $.99, two shirts for her $5.00 each, polo shirt for her $2.99 and two pairs of sweat pants $5.99 each. They are having a great mark down right now, for shirts long and short, hoodies, polos and jeans for $14.99. If your kids love Aeropostale as much as mine do, this would be a good time to start Christmas shopping. (For my dance Mom friends, this was at the Northtown location!)

Breast Self Exam

It's that time of the month again. Time to check out the girls to make sure they are doing good!

Why it is important to examine your breast:

Nearly one in every 10 women is going to develop breast cancer at some time in her life. By examining your breast each month without fail you will be able to detect any lumps or abnormalities right away. That monthly exam is vital since breast cancer caught in its early stages has a cure rate of over 85%.

1. Check nipples for:

__cysts, eczema, ulcers

__discharge, bleeding

__change in shape (inversion, flattening, dimpling)

__change in nipple location

2. Check breast shape for:

__change in size.

__change in contour.

__bulges, flattening, indentation(including armpit area)

3. Check breast surface for:

__puckered, orange peel skin.

__dimples, bulges.

__moles that have enlarged or darkened.

__lumps or thickening

__sores, ulcerations

Remember, the keyword is "change".

If you spot any changes from one month to the next, call your doctor.

What If You Find A Lump

Finding a lump does not mean you have cancer. In fact the odds are very high that is is not cancer. But it is important to see your doctor right away to be sure. Don't stay away because you are afraid of what you will hear. If you have been checking your breast each month, you have caught any problems early, when they are easiest to treat.

So now that you have read this, go take 10 minutes in a quiet room with a large mirror, and look for changes. You deserve to know what is going on with your own body. Take charge of it!
