Memorial Day at Lakewood Cemetery
Lakewood Cemetery is located on Hennepin Avenue at 36th Street between Lakes Calhoun and Harriet in South Minneapolis.
The venerable Lakewood Cemetery once again marks Memorial Day with activities that give families a chance to reflect, learn, and have fun. The day begins with a service and dove release (10:30am); visitors are welcome to bring blankets and lawn chairs. Family activities (12n-4pm) include live music in the chapel, tours, horse and carriage rides, historical exhibits, and more. Head over on the Como-Harriet streetcar (9am-dusk; $2/person) to avoid parking hassles. The Dupont & 42nd Street entrance is open to the public on Memorial Day only (in addition to the main entrance at 36th and Hennepin), but drivers should expect significant congestion and delays.

Veterans are honored during an annual, contemporary Ojibwe pow-wow rooted in traditional ceremonies. People are invited to come together to listen to and dance to the drum on the shores of Mille Lacs, eat fry bread, and shop for authentic American Indian goods in the adjacent Trading Post. This year's event also includes a moccasin-game tournament.
